History of Coffee
Coffee enthusiasts the
world over seem fascinated with the drinks rich and romantic
history. We offer a brief view of its past, with links to
several other sites of interest.
According
to legend, it was an Arabian goatherder named Kaldi, who stumbled upon
the euphoric effects of the coffee plant, when he discovered his goats
dancing joyously around the plant. Kaldi soon determined that it
was the bright red cherries on the shrub caused the euphoria, after
trying them himself. While
this lore seems plausible, recent botanical evidence indicates that
Coffea Arabica originated on the plateaus of central Ethiopia, several
thousand feet above sea level, where it still grows wild. It has been
cultivated in the area which is known today as Yemen, since the 6th
century.
